The mobile messaging app war is on – Facebook buys WhatsApp

Facebook announces it buys Mobile Messaging App WhatsApp for $19 billion dollars. WhatsApp has close to 450 million users, and is increasing with an additional million users every day.

As I wrote the other week, LINE is steadily growing in Japan, and is also attracting users all over Asia, Europa and South America. Currently the mobile app has over 350 million users.

Last week, Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten acquired Cyprus messaging app Viber. The app claims to have over 300 million users worldwide. The Next Web talks about Rakuten’s strategy to focus on the growth of mobile messaging platforms – and to be able to achieve the same journey as Line. (more…)

Visual communication, stickers and emojis, are ever so important in Japan, and all over Asia. They are an essential form of communicating – fun, easy and fast. To succeed in the Japanese market, one needs to see to the way of communication here. And that is, basically, by going visual. Renewal and change of language

Happy new 2014! I moved to Tokyo, Japan last week and am just getting settled into the way of things here. Trying to learn some Japanese, and am trying to decipher the first of three alphabets that I need to learn as we speak.

It’s a new year, and I am at a new location. For this reason, I will also be renewing this blog and start writing in English. Another exciting thing is the fact that my focus as of now will not be just on Western digital trends, as often turns out to be the case when in the West, but I will be focusing on the APAC region as well, in an attempt to make sense of the digital landscape globally. Jag spår sociala medier 2014

Trenderna jag förutspår kommer att forma sociala medier 2014 är fortsatt allt som kretsar kring mobilt, mer fokus på content och därmed en comeback för företagsbloggen, mer social video, ökat fokus på riktig analys och så äntligen lite snygg social annonsering!

Men först kan vi göra en snabb tillbakablick på året som gått. Jag tar hjälp av PR daily som sammanställt en bra lista över 10 viktiga milstolpar för sociala medier 2013. Däribland nämns att Instagram introducerade annonser (läs mitt tidigare inlägg om det här), att Facebook introducerade hashtags (har skrivit om det här), Twitter börsnoterades och Facebook försökte köpa Snapchat. Vad kan vi då förvänta oss av 2014? Och då tänker jag inte nödvändigtvis på sociala plattformar, utan mer på övergripande trender. (more…)
