Digital tools for the remote team

Working remotely is becoming all the more common, both for startups and established companies. As a freelancer, I’ve been working remotely for the past four years – supporting clients in Sweden, UK and the US with the help of digital tools. Svenska Nomader is also a location independent business – and we run the company entirely remotely, most of the time based in three different countries and time zones. Soon coming up to the two year mark since we founded the community, I thought to share some best practice tips for digital tools to use to support a remote team.

Slack

Slack is a great tool for communication between teams – both internally but also with external partners. It’s easy to engage in different conversations on different subjects and to keep up to date with the status of different projects. Just remember to have a clear structure over different channels, and not to create too many as it might become difficult to remember what goes where and to navigate the structure.

Zoom

Zoom is a great tool for video calls between several people. Using the free version, you can only use the service for 40 minutes, which actually is a good thing seeing as it makes calls more productive.

Google Drive

Google Drive is great for sharing documents and files among the team. Also good for co-creation of documents. Don’t forget to create a logic folder structure!

Evernote

Evernote is the perfect notebook that I use for everything when it comes to taking notes on different project and for different clients – with the possibility to create one ‘notebook’ per project. Also create for shared notebooks with the team, for instance to keep meeting notes that everyone on the team can access.

Trello

Trello is an east project management tool where you simply drag and drop digital post-its in different categories. You can also assign different task to different people, specify deadlines, connect files and have a conversation under each post it.
